Founder
A letter from Barry Handy.
I'm Barry Handy, the founder of Handspire Studios. I started the studio as a home for the kind of creative work I most wanted to see more of — projects made with care, built by hand, and shared with intention.
Handspire Studios began with a simple truth: creativity is both deeply personal and universally human. As creators, we use our hands, minds, and voices to give shape to things that don't yet exist — to turn sparks of imagination into stories that move, teach, and connect us.
I founded Handspire Studios to be a home for that process. A place where artistry meets intention, and where each project carries the weight of care, authenticity, and purpose — whether it lives in a book, a conversation, a classroom, or somewhere between.
Across publishing, podcasts, classes, and collaborative media, the work is the same: to nurture creativity in all its forms, and to help others find the courage to share their own vision with the world. At Handspire, we believe imagination is meant to be touched, built, and shared — and that the studio's role is to make that possible for as many voices as we can.

Areas of Practice
Where the work lives.
My practice spans the studio's four working areas — different rooms in the same house, held together by a single sensibility.
-
Writing & Publishing
Working across fiction, nonfiction, and poetry — and shaping the editorial care that brings a manuscript cleanly into the world.
-
Conversation & Audio
Hosting and producing podcast and interview work on art, culture, and personal growth, at a human pace.
-
Teaching & Workshops
Leading classes and creative development sessions for writers, makers, and learners drawn to craft.
-
Collaboration & Multimedia
Directing and contributing to cross-format projects that carry ideas beyond a single medium.
Working Philosophy
How I work.
I approach every project as a practice, not a product. Writing, teaching, recording, making — they're different rooms in the same studio, and the aim is the same in each: to keep the craft honest, the pace honest, and the intention honest, so the work earns its place on its own terms.
Handspire Studios is built to support that. It is a home for creators who want to take the long way — who believe the human touch is a feature, not a flaw, and who would rather make one lasting thing than many passing ones. The studio's role is to hold the space, steady the work, and help the voice behind it find its reader, its listener, its room.
Handspire is also a publishing imprint. Selected books and projects will be released under its name — some written by me, some by other authors we're fortunate to work with — each chosen and made with the same care.
